The Burkett Sisters
Elizabeth A. Burkett formed Burkett Law Offices, LLC in the Spring of 2005. She focused her practice of law on estate planning and administration, and she taught various estate topics to social workers, other professionals, and community members through seminars and continuing education courses. Elizabeth earned her law degree and her M.B.A. degree from Duquesne University, where she was the Assistant Editor for the Business Law Journal. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a B.S. in Accounting and Minors in Economics and Music. Elizabeth was named the 2011 Community Volunteer of the Year by the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce for her work with Senior Saturdays, a community senior citizen fellowship and outreach program which Elizabeth led for fourteen years. Elizabeth passed in 2025 after a brief illness.
Elizabeth's younger sister, Susan A. Burkett, joined Burkett Law Offices, LLC in September 2005 after serving as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Justin M. Johnson of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. Susan earned her law degree from Duquesne University, where she graduated in the top fifth of her class. She graduated from Grove City College with a B.S. in Mathematics and an emphasis in Accounting, and she received the Ketler Award for having the highest math GPA among math majors/minors. Susan was named the 2006 Young Business Leader of the Year by the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce. She pursued further studies through her church, becoming a Certified Lay Servant and completing a certificate program in church administration.
Over its twenty-one-year history, Burkett Law Offices, LLC was voted “Best Attorneys in the East” in the Trib Total Media's Best of the Best/Readers' Choice Awards for sixteen years. The firm also was voted the “Pittsburgh Fan Favorite” (2nd place) for Attorney (Downtown - East Suburbs) by the readers of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2018. In 2014 the Pittsburgh City Paper selected Burkett Law Offices, LLC as “Pittsburgh's Finest Attorney”. Many remember the sisters for their Christian faith and compassionate family caregiving.
This transition marks the end of an era, but it also represents the continuation of a client-centered approach to legal service that both Susan and Elizabeth worked diligently to build.
A Legacy of Service
Throughout her legal career, Susan Burkett has been known for her dedication to helping clients navigate important life decisions with confidence and dignity. Together with Elizabeth, she developed a practice founded on personal relationships, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the people they served. The impact of their work extends well beyond legal documents and court filings—it is reflected in the trust they earned from generations of families.
Following Elizabeth's passing, Susan made the difficult decision to begin winding down the practice and transition into retirement. As part of that process, she sought a firm that would share her values and continue serving her clients with the same level of care and professionalism they have come to expect.
